FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS The $30 million, 45,000-square-foot Orthopedic Associates of Hartford Surgery Center opened last January in Rocky Hill, Conn. It was built to host basic outpatient orthopedic procedures, pain management injections and complex joint replacements, and designed for patient comfort, safety and convenience.

It's somehow fitting that our orthopedic practice's state-of-the-art surgery center has the bright, airy appearance of a beachfront house. When my family and I built a home on North Carolina's Outer Banks, we relied on our vacationing expertise — over the years, we had become really experienced vacationers — to add little details that make our family happier and our days smoother, like the small refrigerator filled with drinks next to where we pack up before hitting the beach. No one would ever confuse ORs with the Outer Banks, but our surgeons and surgical managers similarly relied on 20-plus years of experience in outpatient care to come up with creative ideas that optimized the design of our new digs. Before meeting with architects, we huddled and asked ourselves, What would our dream surgery center look like? Well, it looks exactly like this.
