  • Top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures Of the nearly 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2016, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons says top 5 were: breast augmentation (290,467 procedures, up 4% from 2015); liposuction (235,237 procedures, up 6% from 2015); nose reshaping (223,018 procedures, up 2% from 2015); eyelid surgery (209,020 procedures, up 2% from 2015); and facelifts (131,106 procedures, up 4%from 2015).
  • Don't light up on the day of surgery Smokers who abstain from smoking on the day of surgery reduce their risk of suffering a post-op infection, according to a new study in JAMA Surgery. Of 137 cases of SSIs the researchers reviewed, 67.9% of the patients smoked on the day of surgery, compared with 53.7% of patients who did not light up.
  • Does age affect the outcome of an intra-abdominal infection? Although 2 different cohorts — those ages 65 and older, and those younger than 65 — were treated for complicated intra-abdominal infections using similar regimens of antibiotics, the older patients demonstrated variable sources of infection relative to their younger counterparts, according to a study published in iSurgical Infections. Even so, the study of more than 500 patients finds that advanced age itself does not play a significant role in predicting adverse outcomes for these infections and does not necessitate an altered method of treatment.
