Don't Wait to Register for ASC-8

Only 1 in 5 Medicare-certified ASCs are ready to report flu vaccination data.

Published: October 31, 2014

It's officially flu season. The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) is urging surgery centers to register for ASC-8: Influenza Vaccination Coverage among Healthcare Personnel, one of the 10 the measures included in 2015 for Medicare's ASC Quality Reporting Program. ASCA says less than 1,000 of the more than 5,300 certified surgery centers have enrolled. ASCA is concerned because the online registration process with the National Healthcare Safety Network takes a month to complete.

To comply with ASC-8, surgery centers must report how many employees, licensed practitioners, students and volunteers who are physically present at the facility for at least 1 day between Oct. 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015 receive influenza vaccination administered on site, report in writing that they received vaccination elsewhere, have medical conditions that contraindicated vaccination, have an unknown vaccination status or decline to be vaccinated.

Facilities are required to report the data once by May 15, 2015. For now, CMS is simply gathering the information, but failing to report vaccination stats could lead to future financial penalties.

For more information, check out the CDC's enrollment checklist and letter to surgery centers explaining the program's reporting expectations.
