Great leaders get their employees to reach their top potential and ultimately create top-performing facilities with near perfect patient satisfaction rates. Too often, however, nurse leaders downplay the many skills they bring to the table, try to take on too much themselves or stay in an environment that doesn’t appreciate the years of experience they offer. During a highly interactive, high-energy workshop, Executive Recruiter Andréa Venezio, CEO of Sapphire Health Group (a recruiting firm dedicated to the ASC industry), will share the traits, tools and daily habits top outpatient surgical professionals use to inspire the individuals who report to them. By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a new perspective on what it takes to reach your maximum leadership potential and advance your career to the next level.

What are your goals for the workshop?
I want attendees to walk away with the answer to a critical question, “Am I in the best spot for my career right now?” I also want them to take home tangible advice they can use to further their careers whether they’re looking to hire more staff at the facilities they run, change jobs to seek a more challenging role or simply become the best surgical leader they can be at their current facility. I want to share what I’ve learned throughout my career and give them everything they need to ensure they are in the best spot for themselves professionally and personally. I also want attendees to have fun and share a few laughs.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I’m very comfortable in a leadership role, and it’s always been that way for me. As a child, my mom described me as “bossy” and even joked, “I don’t know how you have any friends.” I was just comfortable taking charge when the situation warranted it. Over the years, I’ve learned the best leaders share many of the same key traits. For instance, they always set clear expectations about exactly what they want their employees to achieve, and communication is constant as the team works to achieve those goals. Top administrators and directors excel at maintaining positive personal relationships with their staff and have strong emotional intelligence skills. Also, and this is perhaps the most important trait, true leaders put themselves out there, accept constructive criticism and then act on the feedback they receive.

Why are leadership and career advancement such important topics for surgical facility leaders?
I think it all goes back to understanding just how valuable you are to your facility. Surgical professionals are caregivers and doers by nature. They know how to get stuff done. But some professionals downplay their skills or see management and leadership roles as too lofty of a career goal. However, they bring so many diverse skills and improve every aspect of a facility’s performance and patient experience. I want professionals running busy facilities to know their worth and understand that if they’re not appreciated, if they’re juggling three jobs at once or if they don’t feel valued, that there’s a place out there where they can shine in a leadership role. They deserve to get up in the morning and feel good about where they work and enjoy what they’re doing. OSM
