Batteries Not Included

In life, you've got to bring your own juice and create your own joy.

BIO

OR Excellence

Bobbie Staten, RN, BSN, MPH, CSP, is what you call a motivational humorist, a fancy way of saying she cracks wise about life, stress and life-balance in a folksy and funny way. "It's everyday humor designed to give you the jump start you've been missing," says Ms. Staten, who started out her career as a nurse before turning to the stage. She'll put the final exclamation point on OR Excellence, leaving you laughing and thinking about letting go of stress, using laughter to let out what she calls "little puffs of pain" and choosing what you allow in your circle of influence.

Batteries not included. Remember how excited you were to open the electrically powered toy you got for your birthday, only to find out that your mom forgot to buy batteries? That's how life is. Batteries aren't included. You don't find joy — you make it. In life, you've got to bring your own juice and make your own joy. You've got to bring the batteries. It's another way of saying that some assembly is required and that you might have to put in a significant amount of extra effort yourself to find peace and happiness.

Don't sweat the small stuff. You get to choose what stresses you, what you let inside your circle, what you let get to your core. That's an empowering notion, but it's easy to overlook that you have this control. One way to avoid stress is by saying no. A lot of times we volunteer and take on more and more. We let others dump on us. Then we get tired and stressed. You're so used to being nice, but you have to learn to say no.
