Price Transparency May Soon Be Mandatory

Published: May 5, 2014

Price transparency for medical services may soon be more than just a novel idea. It could become the law.

Under the umbrella of the Affordable Care Act, CMS has proposed a rule that would require hospitals to either release standard lists of prices for their services or provide public access to prices when they're asked for them.

The proposal is contained in a lengthy document released last week and posted in the Federal Register. The public comment period on the proposal runs through June 30.
