iPod App for Better Knee Replacement
Handheld surgical navigation promises better accuracy.
Published:September 20, 2012
An orthopedic surgeon at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., is using a surgical navigation iPod app to improve the accuracy of his knee replacements.
The Dash joint replacement app is a portable surgical navigation system that runs on the iPod touch and is designed to assist orthopedic surgeons in performing knee and hip joint replacement procedures by giving much more precise measurements in making incisions and placing the replacement knee.
The navigational software relays measurements taken on the patient to an infrared camera positioned a few feet away. A computer at the base of the camera makes calculations, then sends them to the iPod. The result, says orthopedic surgeon George Branovacki, MD, is less pain and swelling for patients, better range of motion and a longer life for the artificial knee. Dr. Branovacki describes it as having "GPS-like navigation" at his fingertips.
