Arthroscopy Benchmarks
AAAHC Institute tallies knee arthroscopy times.
Published:June 22, 2012
In its most recent benchmarking study, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care's Institute for Quality Improvement reviewed the details of more than 11,000 knee arthroscopy with meniscectomy cases. It found that:
• pre-procedure time (that is, the time between the patient's check-in and the surgeon's incision) ranged from 63 to 154 minutes, with the median time 99 minutes. Facilities with shorter times credited paperwork that was completed before the day of surgery and enough staffing to manage the workflow.
• procedure time (from incision to wound dressing) ranged from 17 to 74 minutes, with the median 27 minutes.
• discharge time (from the procedure's end until the patient meets discharge criteria) ranged from 41 to 126 minutes, with the median 77 minutes. The speediest facilities cited the use of short-acting anesthetics and the delivery of discharge instructions in pre-op.
