Cindy Givens, RN, BSN, the 40-year-old administrator of the Surgery Center at Tansbourne in Hillsboro, Ore., was stabbed to death in her home early Monday, police say. Police believe her estranged husband, Steven Leon Givens, 45, of Portland, stabbed her and then reportedly stabbed himself to death shortly afterward in his white pickup truck on the side of a highway.
Steven and Cindy Givens were divorced last year, court records show. Ms. Givens filed for a restraining order against her husband in February 2011, but a judge dismissed it 5 weeks later, according to records. The couple's 3 children, aged 11, 16, and 17, were home at the time of their mother's death, but were not physically hurt, police say.
Mr. Givens allegedly began attacking Ms. Givens shortly before 1 a.m. Monday while she was asleep in bed. She was able to call 911 to report the incident, police say. When they arrived, she reportedly told them her husband had attacked her. She died shortly afterward.
Ms. Givens had served as secretary of the Oregon Ambulatory Surgery Center Association's board.
A memorial fund has been set up for the Givens children. Any U.S. Bank branch can take donations made out to The Cindy Givens Children's Memorial Fund.
