You Might Not Agree With AORN's New Medication Safety Guidelines

AORN calls 2 of its recommended practices "controversial."

AORN won't be surprised if you find fault with 2 of its new medication safety recommendations. Puncturing intravenous solution containers as close as possible to time of use could "impact efficiency," says Ramona Conner, MSN, RN, CNOR, manager of AORN's standards and recommended practices. She also anticipates that some OR personnel may disagree with the recommendation against the use of multi-dose vials because they are a cost-saving measure, but evidence indicates they pose a risk of cross contamination.

You'll find both of these suggestions and more in AORN's 2012 Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.
