The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City received a gold medal for best mobile communication app at last month's Healthcare Internet Conference in Orlando, Fla.
The app, which is downloadable for free at Apple's iTunes store, provides patients with information about bone and joint conditions and treatment options.
It also contains physician bios and contact info, a physician directory searchable by body part or specialty, maps of the hospital's grounds and nearby transportation options, one-touch dialing to physician offices and the hospital's referral department, and lists of educational programs with links to online registration portals (which automatically update iPhone or iPad calendars).
The app is compatible with the Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.
"Mobile technology can educate and empower people, and it may help them maintain good health," says Peter Moley, MD, a physiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery. "We are pleased to offer this user-friendly option to patients, so they can access information on their smartphones or iPads while they are on the move."
