CMS: No Stamped Signatures on Medical Records

Agency issues clarification to curb noncompliance.

Published: February 19, 2009
Categories: News

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will not accept stamped signatures from physicians or other providers on any medical record used to bill Medicare for services provided to its beneficiaries. In a clarification to CR 5971, CMS says it "has identified problems of noncompliance with existing statutes, regulations, rules, and other systematic problems relating to standards of practice for a valid physician’s signature on medical orders and related medical documents." The rules, which apply to all providers or suppliers, allow handwritten signatures, electronic signatures or facsimiles of original handwritten or electronic signatures, but no stamped signatures.
