Perverse Incentives

When an incentive has an unintended and undesirable result that is contrary to the interests of the incentive itself, it's known as a perverse incentive. That's quite a mouthful. It simply means that a thing that's supposed to be good goes bad because sometimes we just can't get out of our own way. Surgeons who invest in surgical centers face perverse financial incentives from all sides.
