The other day I noticed a black box on a wall on the medical-surgical floor. On it, a line of green LEDs formed the shape of an ear. The desk secretary told me it was a noise meter. When background noise exceeded a set decibel level, yellow lights, or even red ones, blinked on to make staff aware of sound levels in patient care areas and, with any luck, to keep them low. What a great idea. I want one for the OR. I'd love to be able to hear what's going on in the surgical field, instead of appearing or actually becoming hard of hearing.
