Physician-owned hospitals race to beat New Year's Eve deadline before health law bars doctor-investors from building new hospitals.

Hand surgeon Frederic Liss, MD, and his colleagues began planning a physician-owned multispecialty hospital in suburban Philadelphia during President George W. Bush's first term, long before healthcare reform was on the national agenda. When lawmakers wrangling over the issue in 2009 targeted physician ownership, the surgeons' years of planning offered little security. They shared the nerve-wracking experience of forging ahead with a project on which they and a corporate partner were spending $23 million as congressional proposals put its completion into doubt. "Were there tense moments? You bet," says Dr. Liss.
