Sharps Injuries: Enough Is Enough

Less talking, more doing. It's time to lead a culture change in your ORs.

During my 30-plus years as a surgical tech, I've been poked, stuck and cut, and even had a perforating towel clip pass clear through my thumb. So yeah, I know a little bit about sharps injuries. And here's what I know: It's time you started taking the issue seriously. We've done a whole lot of talking about the use of safety-engineered devices, hands-free passing, and proper blade and needle disposal, yet sharps injuries in the surgical setting are on the rise. Let's take a look at a few of surgery's high-risk activities and what you can do to limit sharps injuries during them.
