Adding On Without Signing Off

Here's how we stayed productive (and sane) during our hospital's major renovation.

Does it feel like your facility is about to burst at the seams? I was in your shoes not too long ago, before embarking on a multi-million dollar construction project that added 2 ORs and expanded the footprint of my hospital's outpatient surgery center. When I asked in earnest for advice from surgical administrators who had survived a renovation project of their own, they had a look in their eyes that said, "Oh, you poor thing. You have no idea what you're in for." They were right; I didn't. And you won't either until you're sitting behind a desk piled high with architectural plans, work orders, equipment budgets and stacks of tile samples. Going from hard hat to scrub cap won't be easy, but hopefully these tips will help you manage your project just a little better.
