No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

If you automatically deduct a certain amount of time (usually 30 minutes) for meal breaks from non-exempt employees' daily pay, you may be violating federal wage payment laws. I?know it's easier to assume a break has been taken and to automatically deduct the time rather than requiring employees to clock in and out before and after meals. But while complying with wage and hour regulations can be complicated, it's the safer road to take because even honest mistakes can be costly.
