When the Annenberg Simulation Center opens next month at Lankenau Hospital in suburban Philadelphia, surgical residents and OR nurses will sharpen old skills and learn new ones on remote-controlled, life-like mannequins that can make sounds and mimic symptoms. The only thing pretend about the surgical procedures will be the $10,000 plastic patients on which they're performed. Everything will be done as if the patients and the procedures were real, especially the requisite steps needed for good infection prevention, the forerunner of improved patient outcomes and lowered healthcare costs.
