Keeping Daily Tabs on Antibiotic Prophylaxis

Tracking quality and infection prevention data is much more constructive if you do it in real time rather than months after the fact. If you can check during the course of a surgical case whether the patient was, for example, given the correct pre-operative prophylactic antibiotic dose at the right time — within 1 hour of surgical incision — you may be able to catch mistakes and correct them before it's too late. However, if you only review this data during monthly or quarterly quality meetings, not only is it too late to correct mistakes, but also it's much harder to hold people accountable and make meaningful improvements in practice.
