Report: Nimbler ASCs Win Cases From Hospitals
Inside the CDC study that shows dramatic changes in surgery over a decade.
Outpatient surgery exploded over the 10 years from 1996 to 2006, growing some 65 percent over the decade. Most of that growth got sucked up by ambulatory surgery centers. In 1996, ASCs did 16 percent of all outpatient procedures; by 2006, ASCs commanded 42 percent of the overall market and appeared to be well-positioned to take more market share. ASCs were doing procedures much faster than hospitals at close to half the cost.
