Computer-assisted Orthopedic Surgery

Are your orthopods ready for image-guided surgery?

Neurosurgeons, cardiologists and ENT surgeons have successfully integrated image-guided, computer-assisted surgery into their daily practices. These $100,000 to $200,000 systems let them plan their procedures with precision, based on images and models created in advance, and follow the path of their instruments during the procedure. Slowly, orthopedic surgeons have been catching on to this, using computer assistance for total knee and hip replacements, placement of pedicle screws, osteotomies and ACL reconstructions. Surgeons have also experimented with shoulder and ankle arthroplasty.
