When a Medical Event Becomes a Malpractice Case

In Palm Beach County, Fla., a 33-year-old woman had outpatient surgery on her left shoulder. In the recovery room, she complained of hives at the intravenous site after administration of an anti-emetic. The nurse notified the anesthesiologist, who prescribed diphenhydramine (Benadryl). The patient was later discharged.
