For many years I have advocated that the surgeon and patient sign a simple informed consent on the day of surgery and that a facility employee only need witness the signatures. The employee can do the necessary pre- and post-op teaching, but this must not be confused with informed consent; a staff member's role regarding consent should only be to witness the signatures.
