What's normal post-discharge pain and what requires follow-up?

You've heard this warning before, the one about the phenomenon that's difficult, if not nearly impossible, to track in the outpatient setting. You do your best to undertake prevention efforts, but lack of patient education and follow-up on the part of your staff mean it goes underreported ' to what extent, no one really knows. We're talking about post-discharge pain, although it could just as easily be surgical site infections or post-op nausea and vomiting.
