I have heard that loading up on benedryl ahead of time that this will prevent or at least decrease the reaction to it.

What do you use when the patient has a true betadine allergy?

Once the patient is positioned in the OR, we place a drop of 5% Betadine in the eye. We then prep with 10% Betadine. After the prep, the eye is rinsed.

We prep after the pt is positioned with 10% Betadine solution then rinse the operative eye with a solution of 0.5ml Betadine 10% mixed with 200ml NS. Then apply 10% Betadine again waiting 1 min. before patting dry. Jo Ann Johnson, Team Leader Ophthalmic Surgery,

We put a drop of 5% betadine in the eye and then use a betadine swab to coat the outside of the eye and lashes in Pre-op before walking the patient back to the O.R.(this gives the betadine more time to work)
Then after positioning the patient for surgery in the O.R. we prep with a 10% betadine solution, rinsing with sterile water and patting dry, before the Dr. applies the cataract drape to the eye.
