Patient mix in PACU: Post-surgical and post-GI in one room?
Our GI procedure patients (mostly colonsocopies) and surgery patients are cared for in the same PACU. A family member is allowed to be with the GI patient in PACU so that the MD can talk with the patient and family at same time. The challenge is that surgery patients are brought into the PACU from OR. Our nurses have expressed concern about potential cross-contamination between this patient mix in one room. Does anyone have a similar situation and/or suggestions on how to manage patient flow?

I agree as well. Staff members and physicians should be using Standard Precautions at all times. If they are adhering to hand hygiene guidelines and cleaning surfaces appropriately, there shouldn't be any issue. Deanne Weigel (Administrator/Director/Manager/Owner/Exec. I agree with Amy. One type of post op patient shouldn't pose a threat to any other type as long as you are using appropriate infection control practices for all of them. Tara McKinley (Director, Surgical Services/Director of Nursing) at November 2, 2011 (1:07 pm) |

I don't see any reason for concern. Look at standard precautions and transmission based precautions to guide your practice. A normal, healthy colonoscopy patient is of no risk to a surgical patient. There should be no physical contact between the patients. Caregivers should be hand washing. Any soiling of feces or body fluids should be cleaned up prior to leaving OR or procedure room.
