Any product in the marketplace experiences a life cycle consisting of four stages: development, growth, maturity and decline. There is little doubt that, as "products," ambulatory surgical centers are in the maturity stage. There are now about 5,500 Medicare-certified ASCs — more than one for every acute care hospital in the country — and the market is becoming saturated.
