The surgical robotics market is, at present, a small one. The daVinci Surgical System, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical of Sunnyvale, Calif., is the only robotic device approved for general use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Since its approval in 2000, only about 200 of the $2 million devices have been installed in American operating rooms, largely in academic and community hospitals.
