Base Pay Raises on Individual Merit

Ann Geier, RN, MS, CNOR, CASC Every year, when employee evaluation time rolls around, staff hold their breath to find out whether they'll be getting a raises and, if so, how much. We nurse managers have two choices: Give everyone the same cost-of-living adjustment or base increases on individual merit. Neither strategy is perfect, but I generally prefer merit-based increases. Here's why.
