Edited by Beth Hurley, RN, BSN, CRNO, COE This should come as no surprise to you: In nearly every place I've worked, physician preference has overwhelmingly dictated which brand and type of viscoelastic the facility buys. Often, it's a matter of what surgeons used when they learned to perform cataract procedures. But that doesn't mean you have to carry a different viscoelastic for every surgeon who operates at your facility; standardization of product is necessary to remain cost-effective and efficient.
