But the scope of the statute is not so limited. And as more nurse managers assume more authority over the purchasing decisions at the nation's 14,000-plus outpatient surgery centers, now's a good time to note that all healthcare professionals are subject to the act's provisions, and consequences of violation can be severe: huge fines, felony convictions and exclusion from participation in Medicare and Medicaid.
