Extra Light at the Surgical Site
If your surgeons want extra light at the surgical site, the LightMat Ultra-Brite can provide it. The device, from Lumitex, is a flexible fiber optic panel that attaches easily to most surgical retractors with biocompatible two-sided adhesive and can be directly inserted into the surgical cavity. It can also be attached to suction devices or other instruments or used independently. The Ultra-Brite is a single-use device designed for use during gynecologic, general, plastic, anterior spinal, orthopedic, pediatric and other non-laparoscopic procedures, the company says. Only 1.5mm thick and 15.2mm wide, the Ultra-Brite is 70 percent thinner than the standard LightMat and 50 percent brighter than the LightMat UltraThin, according to the manufacturer. It can use a wider variety of light sources, including 300W xenon and metal halide, and is cooler to touch, measuring about 10'C cooler at the handle than the previous version, says Lumitex. A box of five units lists for $299. For more information, call (800) 969-5483, visit writeOutLink("www.lightmat.com",1) or circle number 166 on your Reader Service Card.
